For decades, the Mobile Suit Gundam series has created diverse universes centered around giant robots, or mechs. With popular shows like the original Gundam anime, Gundam Wing, G Gundam, and Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury, it’s become the most successful anime franchise featuring mechs. Recently, one Gundam movie has become a huge hit. And in a surprising turn of events, the film is continuing its run in theaters, boosted by celebrations for the Gundam franchise’s anniversary.
At the Gundam Conference 2026 Spring livestream, it was announced that a new film, Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Freedom Zero, is coming to theaters. Gundam.info confirmed the release and shared a first look trailer. This movie is a prequel to Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Freedom, which premiered in January 2024. The story was originally developed by the writers and director of Seed Freedom during the initial planning stages. More details will be announced soon, and you can watch the teaser trailer now.
The Seed Has Been Planted
I’ve been following the success of Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Freedom, and while it might not be the most iconic anime film ever, it definitely became the highest-grossing one in the Gundam franchise. It pulled in over $36 million worldwide after its release in theaters. What’s interesting is that this movie came out decades after the original series and its sequel, Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny. Now, they’re planning a prequel, but details are still under wraps – it’s supposed to fill in the story between the series and the film. It’s a bit ironic, actually, because Freedom Zero was initially designed as a short-form OVA for smaller screens. But thanks to the film’s success, they’ve decided to bring the mech series back to the big screen.
This recent livestream was part of the excitement for Gundam’s 50th anniversary, and it revealed more than just the upcoming prequel. In addition to announcing a new anime project for Gundam Wing, the franchise also confirmed they’re remastering the original series. While we don’t have release dates for any of these projects yet, it’s likely they’ll be released leading up to the big anniversary celebration.
