The naval Battle of the Gullet, featuring Lord Corlys Velaryon’s fleet against the Triarchy near Dragonstone and Driftmark, is a major highlight of House of the Dragon. The show’s creators felt significant pressure to accurately depict this battle, and showrunner Ryan Condal has said it’s been a constant worry for him. He described the scale of the production – the sets and ships built for the episode – as unusually large and expensive for a single installment of television. Even within the already brutal history of the Dance of the Dragons, the battle stands out as exceptionally terrible, a truly awful event that Westerosi historians would recognize as one of the worst ever.
