With the premiere of House of the Dragon Season 3 just weeks away on June 21st, the showrunner, Ryan Condal, is hinting at the largest battle in the entire Game of Thrones universe so far. Since Game of Thrones ended in 2019, House of the Dragon has been a standout fantasy series, though it hasn’t quite reached the same level of popularity. The buzz around Season 3 suggests that may be about to change. Condal claims the action in the new season will be bigger than anything seen before – surpassing even the most epic battles from all eight seasons of Game of Thrones and the first two seasons of House of the Dragon. Considering battles like the Battle of the Bastards and the Battle of Winterfell, that’s a bold statement!
At SXSW London, showrunner Ryan Condal revealed that the upcoming Battle of the Gullet will be a major event in House of the Dragon Season 3 (as reported by Variety). Described as the most brutal naval battle in the Dance of the Dragons, Condal promises it will be “unlike anything” viewers have ever seen, not just within the Game of Thrones universe, but on television as a whole.
The naval Battle of the Gullet, featuring Lord Corlys Velaryon’s fleet against the Triarchy near Dragonstone and Driftmark, is a major highlight of House of the Dragon. The show’s creators felt significant pressure to accurately depict this battle, and showrunner Ryan Condal has said it’s been a constant worry for him. He described the scale of the production – the sets and ships built for the episode – as unusually large and expensive for a single installment of television. However, he believes it was essential to the story, calling the battle a pivotal moment in the series.
To give a sense of the scale of the upcoming conflict, Condal compared it to the Battle of Helm’s Deep from The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. This comparison highlights how seriously he’s taking the challenge of filming this large-scale sequence.
As a big fan of The Lord of the Rings, I believe that when adapting a story with a famous battle, you can’t just tell the audience it was epic—you have to show it. That’s how I approached the Battle of the Gullet in this story. Even within the already brutal history of the Dance of the Dragons, the battle stands out as exceptionally terrible, a truly awful event that Westerosi historians would recognize as one of the worst ever.
The Battle of the Gullet Sounds Like Exactly What House of the Dragon Needs

The team behind House of the Dragon Season 3, including director Condal, has repeatedly highlighted the Battle of the Gullet as a major event, and we’ll soon see if it delivers on the hype. The recently released trailer for Season 3 suggests it will, offering exciting action sequences that appear to rival the most impressive battles from Game of Thrones.
HBO’s House of the Dragon might be on the verge of a breakthrough. While the show has felt more focused on personal conflicts and less expansive than Game of Thrones, an upcoming battle, if as large as promised, could significantly increase its scope and draw in a wider audience, potentially reaching the epic scale of the Dance of the Dragons storyline.
