How Co-Chairs Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman Broke Met Gala Rules

If you want to receive special attention at next year’s Met Gala, simply become a co-chair.

Traditionally, there was an age requirement to attend the Met Gala. However, rules have become much more relaxed in recent years. Kylie Jenner’s group selfie in 2017 and the event’s own Instagram booth signaled a shift away from strict guidelines.

Nicole Kidman, the co-chair of the event and wearing a red, sequined Chanel gown, arrived on May 4th with her 17-year-old daughter, Sunday Rose. This technically broke the event’s age restriction of 18 and over, though Sunday will turn 18 on July 8th.

Then, Beyoncé and Jay-Z arrived with their daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, who is 14 years old. It became clear that the dress code wasn’t a strict set of rules, but rather guidelines – as evidenced by the variety of looks from celebrities of all ages at the Met Gala.

Blue attended the Met Gala for the first time wearing Balenciaga, and her mother, known for her stunning style, wore a design by Olivier Rousteing.

Nicole was really excited about attending her seventh Met Gala, especially because it would be the first for her daughter, Sunday Rose, and they would be going together. This year, she’s co-chairing the event alongside Anna Wintour, Venus Williams, and Beyoncé.

I was thrilled to hear the Oscar winner talk about joining her daughter in the fashion world! She mentioned on the Las Culturistas podcast back in March that she was ‘so, so happy’ to be able to share this with her daughter, who’s a big fashion fan.

As for the 58-year-old, “I just get to be there for Beyoncé.”

Sunday Rose explained to Vogue that she chose her bright pink, floral dress to represent new beginnings, as it was her first time attending the Met Gala. She wanted the outfit to symbolize something blossoming and fresh.

Nicole explained she planned to wear red to the “Costume Art” exhibit, which had a “Fashion Is Art” dress code, because she wanted to honor the historical use of red in artwork.

For her, the color red represents powerful emotions like love and passion, as well as energy, strength, and the bond of motherhood.

Beyonce stunned in a crystal skeleton dress and sparkling crown, complete with a feathered cape that faded from one color to another. She accessorized with dazzling Chopard jewelry, including an 18-karat white gold necklace featuring a 6.41-carat diamond, and over 140 carats of additional diamonds.

Once inside the event, she changed into a glittering black and gold gown and matching veil.
