Saros, the highly anticipated PS5 shooter from Housemarque, is almost here! Digital Foundry has released its in-depth technical analysis of the game.
The studio appears to have done an excellent job, successfully combining high-quality visuals, impressive effects, and smooth performance.
It’s not surprising, given this team’s focus on high frame rates and detailed visual effects. The particle effects in Saros, in particular, seem to be a standout feature.
I was watching Digital Foundry’s breakdown, and it turns out the game is built on Unreal Engine 5, which is awesome! But what really makes it look so special is all the custom technology Housemarque built on top of that. It’s not just the engine; they’ve added a ton of their own stuff to create that unique visual style.
Although the graphics aren’t the most cutting-edge – details like shadows and reflections are fairly standard – the game makes up for it with a constant stream of impressive visual effects and a consistently smooth frame rate.
According to Digital Foundry, the PS5 Pro is where games really shine, thanks to its upgraded PSSR technology. This improves image quality without affecting how smoothly the game runs.
Tech experts point out that Saros is unusual because most AI upscaling technologies, like PSSR, struggle with fast-moving particles. But this game manages to stay sharp and clear even with lots of sparks and projectiles on screen.
The PS5 Pro version of Saros looks fantastic, consistently hitting 60 frames per second with a 4K output thanks to PSSR upscaling. What’s particularly impressive is how well it handles detailed particle effects, keeping them clear and stable – something many other upscaling techniques struggle with. The game renders internally at 1440p, resulting in a sharp image, and maintains a smooth frame rate with only occasional, brief dips.
DF notes that the standard PS5 performs well, although the image quality isn’t quite as sharp as it is on the PS5 Pro.
The high cost of the Pro version is a barrier for some, but Housemarque has sweetened the deal with their newest game, giving players another good reason to consider buying one.
