The new Masters of the Universe movie is a project Hollywood has been working on for decades: a successful reboot of the popular 1980s franchise. Since the 1987 He-Man and the Masters of the Universe film, there have been several attempts to bring the series back to television, but efforts to relaunch it as a major movie have consistently failed—until now. Travis Knight’s new adaptation of Masters of the Universe finally delivers a big-screen revival, bringing beloved characters to life and including a surprising cameo. Be warned: spoilers ahead!
Let’s be honest, with so many superhero films and endless reboots, it feels like every iconic character has been played by a dozen different actors. Batman alone has had four big-screen portrayals since 2005! But He-Man? Dolph Lundgren remains the definitive He-Man, having originated the role in the 1987 film. That makes Nicholas Galitzine, the new He-Man in this Masters of the Universe movie, part of a really rare group. And the filmmakers clearly recognize that legacy – they’ve even brought Dolph Lundgren back for a role in the film, which I thought was a nice touch.
Masters of the Universe’s Dolph Lundgren Cameo Is More Than Fan Service

The new Masters of the Universe movie revolves around Adam, played by Nicholas Galitzine, who has been stuck on Earth for fifteen years. He arrived without the Power Sword, which forced him to live a normal human life – working and going to the gym. A standout scene involves Adam reaching for some weights when another gym-goer, known only as “Macho-Man,” tells him he’s already using that space.
Dolph Lundgren plays Macho-Man, and his line is a clever nod to his long-standing association with the role of He-Man. Now that actor Ben Galitzine is taking on a similar heroic persona, the scene acknowledges this shift. Galitzine asks Lundgren for advice, framing it as guidance for a newcomer at the gym, but it also subtly refers to becoming the new He-Man. Lundgren’s character then offers valuable advice, applicable both to life and to an actor stepping into an iconic role: focus on your own performance and those around you, rather than worrying about external pressures.
When Dolph Lundgren, playing the Macho-Man, gives a final nod and prepares to leave, he simply says, “Good journey.” This phrase will be instantly familiar to fans of the 1987 Masters of the Universe movie, where Teela and Duncan explain it’s an ancient Eternian expression. But Lundgren’s appearance isn’t just a quick cameo; he returns later with a significant role. After being imprisoned with other Eternians—including key characters from the franchise—Adam remembers advice he received at the gym. This inspires him to find inner strength, support his friends, and rally them to escape and fight back against Skeletor.
What sets Dolph Lundgren’s appearance in Masters of the Universe apart isn’t just that it’s a nod to the original film, but also that it cleverly acknowledges a changing of the guard to the new lead actor. Moments like this – where one actor symbolically passes their role to another – are actually quite uncommon in movies. While actors like Henry Cavill haven’t handed the Superman role to David Corenswet, they do happen occasionally.
Even if you’re not familiar with Dolph Lundgren’s past as He-Man, his appearance in Masters of the Universe works well. The dialogue is meaningful and helps develop both the story and the character of Adam, as portrayed by Galitzine, while also acknowledging the previous actor’s performance. While it’s a nod to fans, it feels earned and creates a satisfying story arc within the film. It’s a really strong choice, and the cameo offers more than just a simple Easter egg.
