Sara Bareilles is being brave about a difficult time in her life.
Singer Sara Bareilles openly discussed her and husband Joe Tippett’s difficulties with getting pregnant in her new documentary, Good Grief, which debuted at the Tribeca Festival on June 4th. The film follows the creation of Sara’s upcoming album, also called Good Grief—her first in seven years.
Sara shared with a colleague who was having trouble getting pregnant that she and her partner had also been trying to conceive for two years, as reported by People.
The 46-year-old woman then became tearful as she revealed that she and Joe had attempted IVF several times.

The Grammy-winning artist explained she’s been meditating on the boundless nature of love. She described focusing on the concept that love can encompass all kinds of people and experiences, no matter how different they are.
She added, “The idea that I could only love a child if it shows up in this one way.”
Just a few days after revealing the name of her new album, Good Grief, on Instagram on June 3rd, Sara described the record as a heartfelt tribute to a difficult period in her life.

As a lifestyle expert, I’ve learned that going through tough times really shows you who your true people are. I’m incredibly thankful for everyone who supported me through a recent difficult period – those who carried me when I just didn’t have the strength to cope. And to all of you who patiently waited for me to resurface, thank you. This experience, as painful as it was, has honestly helped me grow into a more authentic version of myself. It was a deeply emotional journey, but ultimately, a really good one.
Sara has been happily supported by her husband, Joe, throughout her career. They first connected in 2015 when Joe auditioned for her musical, Waitress. After getting engaged in 2022, they married in a small, private ceremony in 2025.
