Sesame Street’s Elmo Reacts to Being Bullied for New York Knicks Tweet

Elmo wasn’t ready for the rebound on his latest tweet.

The well-known performer from Sesame Street clarified a recent post on X. He originally said he hoped both teams would enjoy the NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs on June 3rd. He walked back the statement after Knicks fans criticized it, reminding him that his show is set in a make-believe neighborhood in New York City.

Oops! Elmo’s recent social media post said, ‘Sorry if that last message upset anyone! Elmo didn’t intend to get your hopes up!’

The character’s recent explanation was much better received by fans than his earlier statement.

Someone commented, “Thanks for explaining, Elmo.” They added, “You’ve gotta stay true to where you come from.”

“Elmo’s a New Yorker,” another person wrote, “we all know whose team he’s on!”

Many fans rushed to Elmo’s defense, with one commenting that he’s spent decades spreading kindness and doesn’t deserve to be criticized by the people he’s nurtured. Another fan highlighted that Knicks fans were upset with Elmo simply for acknowledging both teams involved.

Elmo’s first post caused a strong reaction, and many New Yorkers reminded him of his roots, with some sharing his old words to make their point.

Someone on X responded to Elmo with a screenshot of a well-known quote by Desmond Tutu. The quote stated, “If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.”
