As of May 15th, 2026, it’s becoming clear that Sony’s old-fashioned method of handling Early Access games is causing problems. The huge popularity of Subnautica 2 demonstrates this point.
It’s worth remembering this game is on Game Pass, which suggests Microsoft might have an older agreement giving them exclusive rights to it on consoles. It’s a bit strange considering they’re currently advertising Halo for the PlayStation 5, but that’s another issue.
Unknown Worlds hasn’t announced a release date for Subnautica 2 on PS5. A developer mentioned on Discord (and shared on Reddit) that because PlayStation doesn’t currently offer an Early Access program, there are no plans for a PS5 version of the game at this time.
Sony permits some games to launch in Early Access on its PlayStation console, but the criteria for which games are allowed isn’t clear. Palworld is a notable example of this seemingly random selection process.
As a PlayStation fan, it feels like Sony only puts Early Access games on the PS Store if they’re already making a splash. It’s not about giving smaller games a chance, it’s about jumping on what’s already popular, which is a little frustrating.
Subnautica 2 recently reached a peak of nearly 500,000 players on Steam, and it’s been a highly anticipated game there for years, consistently appearing on the most wishlisted lists.
Ultimately, we’re just glad Unknown Worlds managed to release the game, considering all the legal issues detailed in the article below.
Many believe Sony’s cautious approach to letting players try games early is causing them to miss out on some major successes when those games are finally released. We think Sony should reconsider this policy.
Original Story: Subnautica 2’s road to release may be more interesting than the game itself.
If you follow the gaming world, you probably know that Krafton and Unknown Worlds recently had a serious and public disagreement. This led to the removal of Unknown Worlds’ CEO and other significant changes.
A judge ultimately ruled in favor of the San Francisco studio, and the latest trailer doesn’t include any reference to the Korean company. Notably, Ted Gill, the previously fired CEO, is now quoted in a press release, suggesting he’s returned to his position.
Madness!
Players will be able to start playing Subnautica 2 on May 14th, and the development team is eager to get feedback as the game improves with Early Access updates.
The game is launching in Early Access in just two weeks, and we expect it to become incredibly popular.
Subnautica 2 has been at the top of Steam’s wishlist for a very long time, and it’s likely to become a huge sales success when it’s released.
The main issue is that Sony has a particular approach to games released as Early Access titles. While they’ve made exceptions in the past, they generally prefer to launch fully completed games on the PS Store.
Subnautica 2 will launch on PC and Xbox Series X|S on May 14th. PlayStation 5 players will need to wait a bit longer for their turn.
I’m really excited to hear that the game is still planned for PlayStation! And it sounds like we’re getting the full, finished experience, which is awesome. Until then, I guess I’ll have to replay the original and Below Zero to tide me over – not that I’m complaining, they’re both great!
