Viewers of the show The Pitt were surprised to learn earlier this month that Supriya Ganesh, who has played Dr. Samira Mohan since the very beginning, will be departing before season 3 begins.
News reports suggested the character left the show due to the storyline, and Noah Wyle, who plays Dr. Robby, has now confirmed this in a recent statement.
When Variety asked about Ganesh’s exit, Wyle explained that cast changes are expected every season. The writers constantly grapple with how much time can pass while still realistically keeping the core group together, acknowledging that hospital emergency rooms naturally see a lot of staff turnover.
We’re always looking to introduce new characters or give existing ones more prominent roles when cast members leave, helping to keep the stories interesting. However, Supriya has been a vital part of the show since it started.
I absolutely adore Dr. Mohan! It’s been such a pleasure working alongside her and especially with Supriya. We’re all really going to miss her and wish her the very best in whatever she does next.

The show’s creator, R Scott Gemmill, explained that the frequent cast changes reflect the realities of the medical field. He said doctors and nurses often gain experience and then move to new opportunities, and the show aims to portray that process accurately.
We’re making changes to the actors in our show. However, I believe this provides a fantastic opportunity for new talent, and that’s really all we can ask for.
Ganesh leaving the show is reminiscent of Tracy Ifeachor’s exit; she played a key role as Dr. Heather Collins in the first season but wasn’t part of the cast for the second.
When news of her leaving was made public, Gemmill explained to PEOPLE that the character’s storyline was always intended to follow that path. She pointed out that, as the show takes place in a hospital, characters naturally come and go.

While Ganesh might be leaving, another star is getting a promotion to be a series regular.
Ayesha Harris, who previously appeared as Dr. Parker Ellis during the night shifts in seasons one and two, will become a main cast member in season three. Her character will now work the day shift.
You can now stream the first season of The Pitt on HBO Max in the UK. New episodes of season 2 are released every Thursday.
