HBO is known for producing high-quality, uniquely American television, and its 2019 series continued that tradition, surprising many viewers. The show was based on a classic story, but it wasn’t a typical adaptation of a traditional American novel – it took a different approach.
Damon Lindelof’s Watchmen isn’t a remake, but rather a continuation of the story often hailed as the greatest comic book of all time. Originally published by DC Comics as a 12-issue series in 1986-1987, Alan Moore’s thought-provoking superhero tale, brought to life by David Gibbons’ innovative artwork, completely changed the landscape of comics.
After more than three decades and several disappointing efforts, the HBO series Watchmen finally delivers a truly faithful and exceptional adaptation of the original story. Each episode is remarkably well-made, boasting strong performances, stunning visuals, and a fantastic musical score.
Watchmen Is A Sequel To Alan Moore’s Legendary Comic Book Series
Alan Moore’s Watchmen is widely considered his masterpiece and revolutionized the superhero comic book. It captured the anxieties of the Cold War era and the growing disillusionment of Generation X, challenging the traditionally idealized and optimistic portrayal of heroes that was common in comics at the time.
Instead of directly adapting the famous comic book, Damon Lindelof, the creator of Lost and The Leftovers, cleverly used it as inspiration for a new story set in the modern era. This resulting series is widely considered to be the most insightful exploration of race within the superhero genre.
HBO’s Watchmen embraces the original comic’s dark and challenging themes, offering a strong commentary on modern society while also honoring the brilliant work of Alan Moore and David Gibbons. This version is a significant departure from earlier attempts to adapt the graphic novel for the screen.
The HBO Show Is Unrelated To Zack Snyder’s 2009 Movie
Many people believe HBO’s Watchmen is one of the best superhero adaptations ever made, which is quite an accomplishment. It’s definitely a significant improvement over Zack Snyder’s film version of the original comic book.
Zack Snyder approached adapting Alan Moore’s work for the screen more directly than Damon Lindelof. He successfully brought David Gibbons’ striking artwork to life on film, but his 2009 Watchmen movie lacks much of the comic’s thought-provoking themes and sharp wit.
While the HBO series Watchmen includes a nod to the film, it’s a completely separate story from Zack Snyder’s movie adaptation. Though it diverges from Alan Moore’s original comic, the series captures the same feeling and overall message much more effectively than the film did.
Alan Moore Aside, HBO’s Watchmen Is Deservedly Acclaimed
Considering Alan Moore had already distanced himself from his original Watchmen comic and generally opposes adaptations of his work, it wasn’t surprising he didn’t praise HBO’s series. However, his reaction hasn’t diminished the widespread praise the show has earned.
This TV show is a remarkably well-made and bold adaptation. While it’s impossible to perfectly translate Alan Moore’s complex masterpiece to the screen – and shouldn’t even try – this version by Damon Lindelof is a very strong and worthwhile alternative.
