Soldier Boy’s story in season 5 of The Boys felt like a satisfying conclusion for Jensen Ackles’ character, especially before his expected return in the Vought Rising spin-off. Unlike the other central characters, Soldier Boy wasn’t present from the very beginning of The Boys; though he was frequently talked about early on, he didn’t actually appear until season 3.
He quickly became a popular character after joining the show. While his backstory touched on serious issues like PTSD, the show always kept his portrayal lighthearted. This was achieved through his humorous and often absurd lines, and by presenting his complicated relationship with Homelander – whom he saw as a father figure – as a running joke.
Towards the end of season 3 of The Boys, Soldier Boy was frozen again, but Homelander was already thinking about reviving him. This happened in season 5, and while Homelander initially wanted a competitive relationship with his father, things quickly became more complex. Soldier Boy surprisingly revealed a much softer, more vulnerable side.
The Boys Season 5 Has Changed Soldier Boy Forever
Soldier Boy returned in season 5 as the bitter, sarcastic older version of himself. Throughout the season, his feelings shifted from disappointment and envy towards his son to a possible partnership with Homelander. Even from the beginning, the show hinted that Soldier Boy still cared for Clara Vought (Stormfront).
Initially, The Boys suggested Soldier Boy’s relationship with Clara was short-lived and unimportant, similar to Homelander’s. But season 5 has changed that, revealing he genuinely loved her. This love is now shown as the reason he eventually lets go of his pride and stops hating his son, Homelander.
In season 5, episode 6 of The Boys, Soldier Boy reveals he gave Homelander the V-One, granting him immortality, because he thought it’s what his daughter, Clara, would have wanted. Homelander is confused by this sudden generosity, especially considering Soldier Boy previously disliked him. Soldier Boy simply explains his change of heart by stating he “loved her more.”
This major reveal in Soldier Boy’s storyline signals a turning point for his character on The Boys. Over just a few episodes, he’s evolved from a simple villain into someone much more complex and relatable.
While much of his past with Vought is kept secret, the character has developed significantly in season 5 of The Boys. His ability to understand Bombsight, and his decision to remove Bombsight’s powers so he can live a normal life with Golden Geisha, reveals the deep loneliness and vulnerability hidden beneath his tough facade.
Focusing so much on Soldier Boy’s story in season five of The Boys might actually be a problem. It feels like the show is primarily building towards the Vought Rising spin-off. However, it’s also understandable why this storyline was important to establish before Vought Rising begins.
The Change In Soldier Boy’s Story Was Necessary Before His Vought Rising Return
Despite being initially charming in season 3 of The Boys, Soldier Boy didn’t have much depth as a character. His long-standing dislike of Homelander felt repetitive, and his darkly funny personality was one of his few redeeming qualities.
The show rarely highlighted his primary power – shooting energy beams from his chest – and when it did, it often presented it as simply a damaging trick.
In season 5 of The Boys, Soldier Boy appears motivated by something bigger than himself for the first time. He lets his feelings cloud his judgment, leading him to foolishly give Homelander access to V-One. Surprisingly, he also sets aside his ego and allows someone else to shine. His powerful energy beam isn’t just a weapon; it’s used to help another supe who shares his feelings of pain and regret.
Although it’s a bit frustrating that season 5 of The Boys seems to prioritize setting up Soldier Boy’s spin-off over finishing its main storyline, developing Jensen Ackles’ character was important before the events of Vought Rising. Now that the show has built up so much anticipation, we hope the upcoming spin-off lives up to expectations and continues Soldier Boy’s evolving story effectively.
