Following several previews, Archetype Entertainment has now released a longer gameplay demonstration of their sci-fi RPG, Exodus. Often likened to the popular game Mass Effect, Exodus is nearing completion, according to game director Chris King.
The story centers on Jun Aslan, a scavenger who has the unique ability to work with technology from a long-lost civilization. Starting with simple salvage work, Jun embarks on a mission to save their planet from a deadly virus called the Rot. Players can also personalize Jun’s appearance, choosing their gender and even adding details like facial scars.
As you play, you’ll make choices that lead you down one of two paths: becoming a noble Paladin or a powerful Immortal, with the Immortal path offering a more rebellious style of gameplay. Along the way, you’ll meet characters like Tom, Elise (who pilots a mech), Salt – an awakened octopus – and a researcher named Phaedra. Keep an eye out for CC Orlowe, a mysterious figure voiced by Matthew McConaughey, who can provide helpful upgrades.
Battles are interesting, and you can often use stealth to your advantage. You can quietly eliminate enemies from a distance, or become invisible with the Scramble Cloak for silent takedowns. There’s even a chance to disable a powerful cannon using Jun’s skills, potentially eliminating the mercenaries blocking your path – though this might also harm innocent bystanders. The game lets you choose between a Paladin or Immortal path, and your companions will react to your decisions.
The core idea revolves around time moving at different rates – time will pass faster or slower on your home planet compared to when you’re exploring. Returning to Persepolis after each mission, you’ll witness the consequences of your choices on the world around you. One mission sends you to a distant planet following a message from Phaedra’s grandfather, where you’ll face opposition from the Ghost Soldiers. Jun can also use a special gauntlet inherited from his father to alter the landscape for tactical advantage and gain new skills, such as the Lance ability, which is particularly effective against the Ghost Cannon boss.
I’m super excited for Exodus! It’s coming out in early 2027 for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC. The developers, Archetype Entertainment, promised they’ll be showing off a lot more about the game before it launches, so I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for updates!
