As a lifelong fan of the Alien franchise, I’ve seen my fair share of heart-stopping moments and terrifying creatures that have left me sleepless nights. But, after watching the chilling clip from 20th Century Studios’ upcoming Alien: Romulus, I can confidently say that this new installment is shaping up to be a nail-biting addition to the series.
In any case you proceed, avoid shouting out. This appears to be the strategy adopted by Isabela Merced’s character Kay in the latest sneak peek from 20th Century Studios’ upcoming film, “Alien: Romulus”, marking the first installment in the renowned “Alien” franchise in seven years. In this brief excerpt, which you can watch in the video below, Kay strives to remain unnoticed by the dreadful xenomorph and thereby evade and ensure her survival. Maintaining composure and silence is crucial for her here. The scene is tense and offers a glimpse of the monster’s horror, effectively portraying just how perilous the predicament on the ship truly is.
In the movie titled “Alien: Romulus,” we have Cailee Spaeny, known for her role in “Civil War,” David Jonsson from “Agatha Christie’s Murder is Easy,” Archie Renaux who starred in “Shadow and Bone,” Isabela Merced famous for “The Last of Us,” Spike Fearn seen in “Aftersun,” and Aileen Wu. The director, Fede ?lvarez, who worked on “Evil Dead” and “Don’t Breathe,” is at the helm. He has co-written the screenplay with Rodo Sayagues, his frequent collaborator, based on characters created by Dan O’Bannon and Ronald Shusett.
The sci-fi film “Alien: Romulus” is created by Ridley Scott, who is known for directing the original “Alien”, producing and directing the sequels “Prometheus” and “Alien: Covenant”, as well as Michael Pruss from “Boston Strangler” and Walter Hill from the initial “Alien”. Additionally, Fede Alvarez, Elizabeth Cantillon (from “Charlie’s Angels”), Brent O’Connor (“Bullet Train”), and Tom Moran (“Unstoppable”) are credited as executive producers for this project.
What is Alien: Romulus About?
In the story of Romulus, we find a group of young space explorers encountering the scariest creature in the cosmos. This concept was initially hinted at by a deleted scene from James Cameron’s Aliens, as explained by lvarez earlier.
To express something fresh and unique, he opted for a perspective that featured non-experts or scientists as characters; these individuals aren’t adults either. He appreciated the idea of making ordinary people the story’s focus, resembling the viewers more closely – not because the audience is young, but rather because they are uninitiated to the complexities of space travel. When characters are professionals, their knowledge overshadows ours. However, when they’re in their early 20s, they’re still learning how to use spaceship equipment, like figuring out how to open an airlock.
He added, “As children, it’s likely their parents worked together on the same vessel. This is how they became acquainted… There’s a rich history shared among them, as they are essentially each other’s only family. Their bond runs deep; some of them even shared a household. Many of the movie’s main themes revolve around siblinghood and its implications. Interestingly, the larger storyline involving Romulus and Weyland-Yutani is intertwined with this familial connection as well.”
Alien: Romulus hits theaters on August 16th.
