As a seasoned gamer and Marvel fan with decades of comics under my belt, I must say that the latest reveal about the upcoming Fantastic Four movie has me buzzing like a certain flaming superhero. The retro vibe, the cast, and the intriguing hints in the D23 footage have piqued my interest to no end.
Over the weekend at D23, Marvel Studios shared a brief video featuring the cast of the upcoming film Fantastic Four, who were on the movie’s set in London. In the video, they addressed the audience from a retro-futuristic dining room setting. The four main characters sat around a table, and Johnny Storm (played by Joseph Quinn) was seen sporting his Fantastic Four outfit. Instead of the usual high-tech kevlar or tyvek-inspired suit, this costume seemed more like a sweater and spandex pants with a wide, white belt, which aligns well with the overall feel of the movie that appears to be set in a time period several decades ago (and possibly in an alternate universe within the Marvel multiverse).
In simpler terms, three other characters have casual attire. Sue Storm is dressed in a black turtleneck, Reed Richards wears a cardigan over a white shirt, and Ben Grimm dons a hoodie. However, considering the progression of the story, if Johnny is supposed to be in uniform by this point, Ben should presumably have transformed into a massive piece of orange rock already.
As I gazed upon the Fantastic Four logo, it transported me back to the vibrant era between the ’60s and ’80s, a time when comic books were king. The question remains whether each member of this extraordinary team will don identical uniforms or if their costumes will subtly reflect their unique personalities. At the moment, Reed and Sue are casually dressed, while Johnny is suited up – perhaps indicating that he’s more comfortable with superhero fame than his family, or maybe it’s because he needs to keep those unstable molecules at bay to avoid constant flaming!
The Fantastic Four movie is set to debut in cinemas on July 25, 2025, a fortnight following the release of Superman: Legacy. This means that, for comic book enthusiasts, both the origins of the DC and Marvel comic universes will be playing in theaters simultaneously next year.
The upcoming film titled “Fantastic Four: First Steps” features Pedro Pascal (“The Last of Us”) portraying Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby (“The Crown” as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Ebon Moss-Bachrach (“The Bear” as Ben Grimm/The Thing, and Joseph Quinn (“Stranger Things” as Johnny Storm/Human Torch. Julia Garner will make an appearance in the movie as Shalla-Bal/Silver Surfer, with Ralph Ineson playing Galactus. Paul Walter Hauser, John Malkovich, and Natasha Lyonne are set to appear in undisclosed roles. Matt Shakman (“WandaVision”) is directing the film.
