As a long-time fan of both Star Wars and the nostalgic sitcoms of the ’90s, I couldn’t be more thrilled about the latest addition to the Star Wars universe: Star Wars: Skeleton Crew! The fact that Jaleel White, who brought us the iconic character Steve Urkel from Family Matters, is joining the cast as a space pirate named Gunter, just adds an extra layer of excitement.
In the upcoming Disney+ series titled “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew,” a popular sitcom actor from the ’90s has been roped in to portray a space pirate. This new Star Wars show is deviating slightly from its traditional narrative style. Led by Jude Law, “Skeleton Crew” follows a group of four youngsters as they navigate an interstellar journey. When you find yourself adrift in a distant galaxy, it’s not uncommon to encounter some questionable characters. Over the years, the Star Wars universe has been populated with pirates, and one of the latest additions to this rogue’s gallery is Jaleel White, best known for his role on the ABC sitcom “Family Matters.
Skeleton Crew”. Notably, Jaleel White, known for his role as Urkel on “Family Matters”, is part of this crew. His character’s name is Gunter, who appears to have a cyborg-like appearance. Gunter is depicted with a sensor over his right eye and a panel attached to his chest. Next to Gunter stands Vane, portrayed by Marti Matulis. Star Wars enthusiasts may recognize Vane from “The Mandalorian”, where he gave Din Djarin and Greek Karga quite a bit of trouble. The other pirates in the photo include Brutus (Frank Tatasciore), Stephan Oyoung, Pax (Mike Estes), and Chaelt (Dale Soules).
Skeleton Crew creators discuss how space pirates factor into Star Wars show
Jon Watts and Christopher Ford discussed their decision to include space pirates in ‘Star Wars: Skeleton Crew’. According to Ford, they’re taking advantage of the freedom this era offers, saying, “Since the Empire is no more, we’re exploring a part of the galaxy experiencing a piracy revival.” They spoke about this with Entertainment Weekly.
In Star Wars, pirates are frequently mentioned, as Ford pointed out. Characters like Han Solo would bristle at being labeled a pirate, yet they still managed to captivate audiences. Notably, the animated shows have introduced some remarkable pirates. This project, it seems, appealed particularly to executive producers Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau because of its pirate theme.
Director Jon Watts expressed his enthusiasm about working within the Star Wars universe, which he connected to his fondness for a particular Lucasfilm game from the ’90s, namely Monkey Island. He added, “I’m a fan of Monkey Island too; that’s more classic Lucas. So we can say our project lies somewhere between Star Wars pirates and Monkey Island pirates. I believe we’ve found our perfect blend.
What is Star Wars: Skeleton Crew about?
As four children uncover a puzzling secret within what appeared to be a secure home world, they become disoriented in an unfamiliar and hazardous cosmos. Navigating their path back home, encountering unexpected friends and foes promises to deliver an exhilarating journey beyond anything they had previously envisioned.
In a different rendition, we find Jude Law portraying the role of Jod Na Nawood, an adult leader in a group of children traveling through space. This group includes Wim (Ravi Cabot-Conyers), KB (Kyriana Kratter), Neel (Robert Timothy Smith), and Fern (Ryan Kiera Armstrong). They’re all part of the Fantastic Four in the films “Captain Marvel” and “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore”.
Star Wars: Skeleton Crew debuts Tuesday, December 3rd on Disney+.
