As a lifelong DC fan and aficionado of all things comic book related, I must say that this week’s episode of Creature Commandos has left me utterly spellbound! The revelations about the future of the DC Universe and the potential members of the Justice League are nothing short of electrifying.
Although the animated series “Creature Commandos” draws connections to previous DC projects like “Peacemaker” and “The Suicide Squad”, it marks the initial instalment in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DCU franchise. Filled with Easter eggs and hints about the larger DC Universe, it suggests how future projects such as Luca Guadagnino’s “Sgt. Rock” movie might fit within the timeline. This week, however, Episode 4 of “Creature Commandos” showcased its most significant cameos to date, revealing potential members of the Justice League in the DCU.
Let’s just say: we were not expecting some of them to pop up!
WARNING: CREATURE COMMANDOS EPISODE 4 SPOILERS!
At the onset of the new season, the Creature Commandos are dispatched to Pokolistan with a mission to safeguard Princess Illana Rostovic (portrayed by Maria Bakalova) against Circe (depicted by Anya Chalotra). Given that Pokolistan is an essential partner to the U.S., primarily due to its oil resources, Amanda Waller (voiced by Viola Davis) believes it necessary to deploy a covert team for resolution. Yet, Episode 4 offers a surprising twist when it’s disclosed that Circe is working to save the world, and Princess Illana turns out to be the real antagonist instead.
Circe’s ability to foresee the future brought her a distressing image of Illana gaining dominion over the planet, which she relayed to Waller to emphasize the gravity of the situation at hand. According to Circe’s prophecy, Illana would ally with Gorilla Grodd and mobilize an army in armored vehicles to wreak havoc on the world’s free nations. In this bleak future, America endures relentless bombardment, with its survivors meeting their untimely end in mass graves. The Justice League, Earth’s guardians, are depicted as martyred heroes, impaled and crucified in a field engulfed by flames.
In the future as foreseen by Circe, it appears that the Earth’s heroes will be guided by DC Comics’ original trinity: Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. Given the current roster of characters in the DC Universe, this isn’t too unexpected. Next year, we can look forward to seeing David Corenswet portray Superman on the big screen. Simultaneously, DC Studios is working on a new cinematic universe debut with Batman: The Brave and the Bold. Lastly, hints of Wonder Woman have been subtly dropped in the Paradise Lost series, which is set within Themyscira.
A fascinating aspect of Circe’s visions lies in the fact that DC’s trinity is accompanied by a diverse array of heroes. Some of these characters deviate from the typical Justice League mold, whereas others are beloved figures whose inclusion in the DC Universe was yet to be revealed.
Who Are the Impaled Superheroes in Circe’s Vision?
Besides Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman, Circe’s vision reveals the deceased bodies of Supergirl and Hawkgirl. These two characters are set to first appear in “Superman,” with Isabela Merced’s Hawkgirl expected to play a significant role in the DCU based on her appearance in Circe’s vision. As for Supergirl, it’s not surprising she was part of the massacre given that Milly Alcock portrays Kara Zor-El in “Superman” and is also starring in her own upcoming film, “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.” Similarly, Mr. Terrific (Edi Gathegi), who will first appear in “Superman,” met his demise at Circe’s hands as well.
In a more casual and clear manner: In the series Peacemaker and its upcoming Season 2, John Cena plays Peacemaker, a rather unusual hero who operates under the radar due to his questionable methods. Similarly, Freddie Stroma portrays Vigilante. Since Season 2 follows the storyline of Superman, it seems these DC Universe characters could become more intertwined. Circe’s vision hints at this, suggesting that Peacemaker and Vigilante might team up with the Justice League to battle Grodd if Illana succeeds in her quest.
In Circe’s vision, it’s tricky to pinpoint the other fallen heroes since they appear briefly and somewhat indistinctly. However, there are a few designs that stand out. For instance, it seems Robin might be among the deceased, which aligns with Damian Wayne’s introduction in The Brave and the Bold. Additionally, Starfire appears to be on the fiery battlefield, suggesting she may join the Teen Titans in the upcoming DC Universe movie focusing on the team.
As a devoted movie enthusiast, it struck me that Aquaman and Martian Manhunter might’ve been among those fallen heroes on the screen. These two are iconic members of the Justice League and pivotal figures in DC comics lore. Interestingly, they haven’t yet been mentioned in any of the upcoming DCU projects. Their appearance in this battle scene could be a hint from Gunn that these characters won’t be overlooked and will make their way onto the big screen sooner than later. Lastly, there’s a character who seems to be Captain Atom, a radioactive metahuman whose popularity skyrocketed post his stint in the classic Justice League Unlimited animated series.
New episodes of Creature Commandos hit MAX every Thursday until January 9, 2025.
